Genealogy - Researching Military Service Records of Independent Wars

When we think of researching our ancestor's military records, we generally think of the World Wars, or in the States, the Civil and/or Revolutionary Wars.

But have you ever considered researching independent battles? A quick Google may reveal that your military ancestor participated in a number of wars that don't readily come to mind.

Ancestry.com has a database of those who may have been a casualty of war during the Second Boar War 1899 - 1902 in South Africa. (UK, Casualties of the Boer War, 1899-1902). Free for the research is South Africa, Second Boer War British Service Register: 1899-1902.

Fold3 and other various websites supply available records for such engagements as the Mexican-American and Early Indian Wars, the French-Indian War, and the Mexican War 1846-1848.

If you can not readily access online records, most sites supply the information needed to find this information on microfiche or through written correspondence.
