Genealogy - Why Should I Care About Tax Records?

As discussed yesterday, sometimes Tax Records will be all we discover in a ten year period, and it helps us keep tract of our ancestor's locations.

Each state was different in its record keeping, and the amount of information definitely varied from era to era. Perhaps you'll only discover a name and tax owed, but perhaps you'll be fortunate and discover addresses, size of parcel, value of property, and the all important, names of your ancestors.

If they signed the records, you may find changes in name spellings, an important middle initial, and which one really was the father or son.

Whether you feel it is important or not, do consider adding information regarding taxes into your family's history. Over time, you'll discover a story within a story to pass on to later generations.
