The Census States My Grandfather Worked As A Coal Cutter. What Is That?

This was a man who operated a Coal Cutter. A Coal Cutter was a hand-manipulated but
power-driven machine that is used to detach coal from the vein usually by sawing or drilling.

Just as in other professions, all coal miners did not perform the exact same job or worked deep in the mines. Many had specific areas of expertise and had various titles.

However, on the the various Census Records they were often grouped together as Coal Miner or Miner.
