According To The Census of 1911, My Grandmother Was A "Charwoman". What Is A Charwoman?

Charwoman was a woman who took in sewing, laundry, and performed cooking and/or cleaning. Depending on the era, it was a very lowly position and the wage was exceptionally meager. But for many, it kept them from being absolutely destitute.

Today, even though the stigma remains, the wages for a woman to perform the same duties can bring quite a livable wage.
