There are several groups of people that are difficult to trace in the US Census Records. A few examples would be:
- Native Americans
- Those listed on the Slave Rolls
- Those of strict religious groups that chose not to interact with others outside their order
As in the first two examples, the filing pages used for the general population were not used for them. Their information was limited at best and family connections are not easy to note.
Family stories and old family books and bibles become valuable in this instance as they are a way to trace your ancestors. Using the words spoken or written, you'll have a basis to begin your search.
Are they a perfect source of tracing? As in all families, no matter the nationality, stories abound and expand with time! But they are better than nothing, and each puzzle piece that is discovered is a blessing.
